Perhaps Adobe should focus more on creating great HTML5 tools for the future, and less on criticizing Apple for leaving the past behind. New open standards created in the mobile era, such as HTML5, will win on mobile devices (and PCs too). And the 200,000 apps on Apple’s App Store proves that Flash isn’t necessary for tens of thousands of developers to create graphically rich applications, including games. The avalanche of media outlets offering their content for Apple’s mobile devices demonstrates that Flash is no longer necessary to watch video or consume any kind of web content. If you continue to press the forward key and simply turn the mouse, you’ll hardly manage to make a sharp turn (unless you stop jumping, which slows you down a lot). However, you’ll face complications if you now try to turn once you gained some speed. This is quite easy and there’s nothing really to master about plain forward bunny hopping. If you press the forward button while holding the jump button, you’ll continuously get faster until you hit the acceleration limit. The good thing is that you only need to keep the jump button pressed and you will jump again once you hit the ground (unless of course you disabled that in Settings → Input). By constantly jumping (“bunny hopping”) you can keep ground contact to a minimum. One of the keys to gain high speeds in Xonotic is therefore to touch the ground as little as possible. When you just walk around though, your feet are in constant contact with the ground, so the friction is slowing you down a lot. In Xonotic you have a lot of movement control while you are in the air (“air control”), and to a great extent you’ll accelerate when pressing the forward button while flying. You may have noticed that players race around the maps at insane speeds, making them hard to hit and also hard to tell from which direction they’ll come next, should you survive an attack. Understanding and mastering Xonotic’s movement is a key success factor in this game, apart from making it incredibly fun to play once you get the hang of it. MovementĮven though people tend to be more interested in what the weapons do when they first try out a new first person shooter, I prefer to follow the structure that I established for my live newbie tutorials and to start off with the movement. The purpose of this Newbie Corner is to allow any new player to develop the same skills that experienced players have already gained, simply by showing how it works. The skill gap between newbies and experienced players mostly results from newbies not knowing gameplay mechanics and therefore lacking the ability to acquire skill in the first place. There are a couple of mechanisms implemented in the game that effectively prevent cheating, and from my personal experience I am confident to say that cheating is not really an issue in Xonotic. That’s how I myself learned about blaster jumping and strafe turning for example.Įven if the skill gap between you and another player is immense, it is highly improbable that the other player is cheating. Some of them might even offer to show you around by giving you a short live tutorial. Most of the experienced players will take their time to shortly explain gameplay techniques to newbies if asked nicely. If you meet very strong players online and wonder how they do certain things, it usually pays off to simply ask them. Remember that the Xonotic player community is generally considered a very friendly and helpful one and for many people (including me) this is the key aspect that gets one hooked to this game. If you want to fully apply the knowledge gained from this guide, search for vanilla servers - Normal category in the server browser. The XDF ruleset has different physics and a separate video-guide called XDF Academy. Note that whereas movement aspects should usually apply more or less unchanged to modified servers offering InstaGib, vehicle CTF or Overkill gameplay, I will not explain the specifics of these game mutators/rulesets - I simply lack the expertise in non-vanilla game modes. Not that everything is, like, super serious of course. While you may not have noticed it, that basis in reality really grounds the series and gives it some much needed weight. Some of the best jokes in the series are derived from complex real world ideas and theories. The science behind Rick and Morty may be exaggerated, but it's still a core part of the narrative. This concept is called the Many Worlds Interpretation in the scientific community, and it has been an area of exploration since the 1950s. The entire show is built off of the premise of multiple dimensions, all of which are slight to radical variations of our own. If some committee of fancy a**holes disagree about something, you can disagree back. What you can't do is just add a sci-fi word to another word and hope it means something. So how accurate is the science behind Rick and Morty plots? Well. not very, but there are bits of truth to every episode. Roiland’s Solar Opposites was included on Uproxx‘s list of Favorite Under-the-Radar Shows For 2020 thanks to the offbeat and fun nature of the alien comedy series, which made a strong debut and only got better as the season progressed, particularly when it hit Episode 7, “Terry and Korvo Steal a Bear.” As Senior Pop Culture Editor Josh Kurp wrote: “If ‘tiny humans going through a revolution, led by Forrest MacNeil and Joan from Mad Men, in an alien’s bedroom’ doesn’t convince you to watch Solar Opposites, I don’t know what will.Rick and Morty explores a lot of classic sci-fi tropes, like faster-than-light space travel, exploring alternate realities, and building an amusement park inside of a homeless man. He also got high critical praise: a New York Times review reads, "Mr. Scott did, though, get the production's sole Tony nomination for starring as Willy. The 1975 Death of a Salesman revival, the show's first, was the only one thus far not to win the Best Revival Tony Award. It was a critical hit, but not an audience one at a time of post-World War II prosperity and hope, film audiences weren't as keen as Broadway audiences on seeing a story about a working American's failure. Though Death of a Salesman was a success on Broadway - winning six Tony Awards including Best Play, Best Director, and Best Author, as well as the Pulitzer Prize - the show didn't do as well when it got the film treatment a year later. Kazan's vision and Mielziner's set have done the same, as has the incidental score by Alex North, which multiple revivals reused. In the years since, Cobb's grand performance has become iconic, influencing all the Willys that have come after him. But as the story goes, Cobb suddenly came out of his shell one day and his performance "clicked" for everyone in the room. Miller wasn't sold on the casting at first, though, complaining that Cobb's delivery was more reserved than everyone else's in rehearsal. He and director Elia Kazan - yes, the very same Hollywood legend - called Cobb the "walrus" and eventually added that descriptor into the script. Cobb, the burly man who was eventually cast, "seemed to lack the size of the character, even if they fit the body," Miller wrote in his autobiography Timebends. Miller envisioned Willy as a physically small man, to emphasize the large weight of the world and his failings on him. One way the production differed from his vision, however, was in its lead casting. Miller also wanted softer, warmer lighting for scenes in the past than in the present. In his vision, the walls of the Loman house were transparent, and you'd know whether a scene took place in the present or the past depending on whether the characters were walking through or around the walls. Miller himself was heavily involved in the production: Jo Mielziner designed the sets and lighting to his precise specifications. Opening night was on February 10, 1949, and after rave reviews, the show ran for 742 performances in just under two years. Learn fun facts about the casts and what makes each production, especially this one, stand out among the rest.ĭeath of a Salesman was all but an instant classic when the show premiered at the now-demolished Morosco Theatre on Broadway. To commemorate the latest revival, we're looking back on all the Death of a Salesman productions from 1949 to today. Now, he must reckon with his failure and the fact that he is partly responsible. He's chased the American Dream of prosperity for decades and failed to achieve it, keeping himself afloat with delusions. Reprising an acclaimed London performance, Wendell Pierce stars as Willy, a salesman at the end of his career and his life. The fifth and latest Death of a Salesman revival on the horizon is set to open in September at the Hudson Theatre. That's unsurprising, though, for a Pulitzer Prize-winning play that's often called one of the best of the 20th century, and which many celebrity actors have flocked to. What's even more remarkable is the show's impeccable track record: Nearly every production has won at least one Tony Award, and each one has received critical acclaim. But with six Broadway productions as of 2022, it's certainly revisited more than most shows. Arthur Miller's 1949 masterwork Death of a Salesman may not be one of the most revived plays on Broadway compared to even older works, like those of Shakespeare. When you’ve made your way to landfill / the recycling centre, the back door of the truck then hinges upwards, and the orange container can raise up to pour out all the trash. Its lowermost boundary is at a thermocline of 12 ☌ (54 ☏), which, in the tropics generally lies between 200 and 1,000 metres. The dysphotic zone is also referred to as the mesopelagic zone, or the twilight zone. The lower portion of the photic zone, where the light intensity is insufficient for photosynthesis, is called the dysphotic zone (dysphotic means "poorly lit" in Greek). The uppermost portion of the photic zone, where there is adequate light to support photosynthesis by phytoplankton and plants, is referred to as the euphotic zone (also referred to as the epipelagic zone, or surface zone). The photic zone can be subdivided into two different vertical regions. The stratum of the water column nearest the surface of the ocean ( sea level) is referred to as the photic zone. Photosynthesis in turn requires energy from sunlight to drive the chemical reactions that produce organic carbon. Nearly all life forms in the ocean depend on the photosynthetic activities of phytoplankton and other marine plants to convert carbon dioxide into organic carbon, which is the basic building block of organic matter. The ocean can be conceptualized as zones, depending on depth, and presence or absence of sunlight. Due to darkness and a water pressure that can reach about 750 times atmospheric pressure (76 megapascal), abyssal plains are not well explored. They are poorly preserved in the sedimentary record, because they tend to be consumed by the subduction process. Deep sea coral reefs are mainly found in depths of 3,000 meters and deeper in the abyssal and hadal zones.Ībyssal plains were not recognized as distinct physiographic features of the sea floor until the late 1940s and, until recently, none had been studied on a systematic basis. Due to scarcity of oxygen, abyssal plains are inhospitable for organisms that would flourish in the oxygen-enriched waters above. Much dissolved oxygen in abyssal plains came from polar regions that had melted long ago. Animals absorb dissolved oxygen from the oxygen-poor waters. Factors such as climate change, fishing practices, and ocean fertilization have a substantial effect on patterns of primary production in the euphotic zone. The structure of abyssal ecosystems is strongly influenced by the rate of flux of food to the seafloor and the composition of the material that settles. They also exert significant influence upon ocean carbon cycling, dissolution of calcium carbonate, and atmospheric CO 2 concentrations over time scales of a hundred to a thousand years. Owing in part to their vast size, abyssal plains are believed to be major reservoirs of biodiversity. There are also amounts of carbon, nitrogen, phosphorus and silicon, due to material that comes down and decomposes. Metallic nodules are common in some areas of the plains, with varying concentrations of metals, including manganese, iron, nickel, cobalt, and copper. The rest is composed chiefly of pelagic sediments. Much of this sediment is deposited by turbidity currents that have been channelled from the continental margins along submarine canyons into deeper water. Abyssal plains result from the blanketing of an originally uneven surface of oceanic crust by fine-grained sediments, mainly clay and silt. Magma rises from above the asthenosphere (a layer of the upper mantle), and as this basaltic material reaches the surface at mid-ocean ridges, it forms new oceanic crust, which is constantly pulled sideways by spreading of the seafloor. The creation of the abyssal plain is the result of the spreading of the seafloor (plate tectonics) and the melting of the lower oceanic crust. Abyssal plains are key geologic elements of oceanic basins (the other elements being an elevated mid-ocean ridge and flanking abyssal hills). They are among the flattest, smoothest, and least explored regions on Earth. Lying generally between the foot of a continental rise and a mid-ocean ridge, abyssal plains cover more than 50% of the Earth's surface. An abyssal plain is an underwater plain on the deep ocean floor, usually found at depths between 3,000 and 6,000 metres (9,800 and 19,700 ft). |
